Homestuck Re-read Part 9: ACT 3

Not as late today! I've spent most of today finishing fixing my DNS issues from yesterday properly rather then just a hotfix to get things working. I am not entirely sure what I did to fix it other then start editing config files with wild abandon, but it did somehow fix it. Now I just have to hope the google DNS servers never go down or something makes me need to change away from them since I can't remember how. After that I went off on some kinda half-cocked partly homestuck-inspired plan to setup an IRC server and then couldn't find an IRC client I liked and realized that trying to route notifications to my phone via an IRC client isn't a super smart idea as well.

Anyway.

Homestuck: Act 3 begins now. There's only 75 pages in today's update, which feels kinda small. Although knowing Homestuck that could mean theres a page twice as long as the current length up til now.

Let's get started.

ITS HER ITS HER FOR REAL!!!!

jade ! ! ! ! ! ! Finally!

She's finally here properly! Jade Harley! She can't play the flute!

This is the first time we get to see non-data structure fetch modi, with examples like

It's a wonder how with the amount of just, blatant copyright infringement 1 there is in Andrew's work that nothing ever came of it. I can buy it in 2009 when big companies were only just getting a handle on the internet but the fact it continued to survive past that surprises me.

When people discuss fan kids or trolls or such, I don't think I've ever seen much discussion about fetch modus. I imagine it's because there is the like, Big Ticket fan-character defining choice of their classpect2 taking up a lot of their characterization. This might also be because I've never paid a huge amount of attention to fan works really. Not out of disdain or anything; i've just never really felt the need to engage with fandom a lot. I guess that's a weird thing to say while actively blogging a re-read of something. I don't know.

I should make a fan kid/troll. Maybe I'll do that as like, a bonus update or something.

ARCHITECTURE

Jade's home is, unusual and very large. Pillars and spiral staircases around...

Is that an APPEARIFIER(?)? Or the depositing pad for one at least? Just, in the middle of the stairs?

Well I guess not. That's a TRANSPORTALIZER(?) or something. Wow I wonder how Jade has one of them. This girl is just fucking beaming herself up and down her own home.

Finally the introduction! Solo narcoleptic nuclear physics seems like a bit of a dangerous combination, but I'm sure it's perfectly fine. Plus a child as whimsical as her can be trusted with unrestricted access to multiple firearms. We also get to learn about Jade's grandfather.

A WORLD RENOWNED EXPLORER-NATURALIST-TREASURE HUNTER-ARCHEOLOGIST-SCIENTIST-ADVENTURER-BIG GAME HUNTER-BILLIONAIRE EXTRAORDINAIRE.

I can't wait until we meet him, he sounds like he'll be quite the character. Assuming the 'stern lectures' don't outstay their welcome. There is also a (living) pet for us to meet. "BECQUEREL": the, animal? A bit of an unsettling name.

Furry! I'm sure that won't ever come up again. :3

WAIT, VOLCANO?

We saw that in the flash that finished act 2! That means there's a giant frog temple outside, which has something to do with sburb. Probably explains why the world renowned explorer decided to settle down here, this must be important.

Also there is a magic 8 ball. This will be important later.

Looking back on it, this is actually a good bit of foreshadowing. The 8 ball is right in a way; It is 'not exactly' John's birthday. Granted we don't yet know that the beta kids were sent to earth as babies riding meteors dispatched from the veil at the edges of the incipisphere or quite how much sburb and paradox space muddles the idea of linear time. I guess that's why it's foreshadowing though. Otherwise it would be postshadowing? Either way, that does work out to it being 'not exactly' John's birthday.

Back on topic, there is also a cue ball. Supposedly a perfect oracle of the future, were it possible to view below it's surface. This too will almost certainly be important later.

The animal eats irradiated steak. What nature of beast is this.

HAUNTINGLY RELAXING BASELINE

We get to hear the precursor to Jade's leitmotif. Playing it grows the plants and during the performance a blue package is airdropped over the island. We get to see the frog temple dominate the archipelago near the volcano. Jade's house is an unusual shape.

HACKER VOICE: SHE'S IN.

HACKER VOICE: DAVE IS SAYING SOME WEIRD SHIT. Killer fursona and some iconic music.

I really need to read problem sleuth. Also hey it's the midnight crew, facing off with The Felt! Surely these guys won't ever be important in a way that makes me want to skip over them because I'll think they're just a kinda pointless side quest and have to be assured it's important to read it.

END OF UPD8

That's all for tonight folks. We close out seeing a furaffinity page with some dragons and that John is still nowhere to be seen. I am going back to my quest to get an IRC server working or something. See you all tomorrow.

  1. I know this instance wouldn't constitute copyright infringement (I think?), but it's just what prompted the thought.
  2. Classpect = Class3 && Aspect3
  3. We'll talk about those later.
